Indiana GOP Rep. Jim Banks won his party's nomination for a seat in the United States Senate on Tuesday, which solidifies him as the favorite to win the seat in November.

Banks, who ran for Sen. Mike Braun's seat unopposed, will now face either Valerie McCray or Marc Carmichael in the general election. Banks's decision to run for the Senate instead of running for reelection in the House comes after Braun opted to run for governor of the largely conservative state.

Banks is considered the favorite to win the Senate seat because Democrats have only won one Senate seat in the state since 2004, according to NBC News.
