Minnesota Democratic state Sen. Nicole Mitchell faces a first-degree burglary charge following her arrest in the city of Detroit Lakes earlier this week.

Mitchell told police that she was attempting to recover some of her late father's possessions, such as "pictures, a flannel shirt, ashes, and other items of sentimental value," according to The Hill.

She was arrested around 4:45 a.m. on Monday after police responded to a 911 call. They found Mitchell dressed black clothes and a black hat.

"I was just trying to get a couple of my dad’s things because you wouldn’t talk to me anymore," she said to her stepmother during her arrest, according to a complaint reviewed by the outlet. The stepmother had reportedly cut off contact with the family following the death of Mitchell's father.

"[C]learly I'm not good at this," she reportedly said during the arrest.

Mitchell is a former Air Force lieutenant colonel.
